Rising 6th Grade Info

Mrs. Britt

Welcome, Chargers!

We are so excited to help you begin your middle school years at Chickahominy. Middle school is an exciting time full of new friends and new experiences. While you may be nervous, there are many helpful people to answer your questions, help show you around, and celebrate all your successes throughout the next three years.

Looking forward to seeing you soon, Chargers,

Mrs. Britt, 6th Grade Senior Teacher

Transition activities will take place in collaboration with our feeder elementary schools starting in the winter of your 5th grade year. Transition activities are planned for students and families to help you get ready to be a CMS Charger.

Charger Camp is a session where rising 6th graders explore and experience Chickahominy. They will meet fellow Chargers, try out lockers, tour the building, meet CMS staff, and have a ton of fun. Information will be on the website as it becomes available.

Transition Activities

  • School counselors present virtual lessons to elementary schools (spring semester)
  • Virtual rising 6th grade information night (spring semester)

Planning Your Schedule

Our Chargers follow the block schedule with an alternating A/B day schedule with four classes each day that are about 90 minutes long with a FLEX/home base each day after lunch. Chickahominy Middle School uses academic teams to establish a sense of community within the larger school setting and provide the best possible middle school experience for all our students. Teams are comprised of four academic core teachers with approximately 110 students.

What is FLEX?

All Chargers also are enrolled in FLEX. FLEX is a 30-minute “homeroom” that occurs each day. FLEX is a time to catch your breath, start your homework, experience enrichment and remediation lessons, and to participate in Charger character education and bully prevention lessons. Student clubs are also semi-monthly during FLEX.

What is Split Block?

Students doing a classroom activitySplit block allows for Chargers to have math and language arts every day. One block every other day will be a split block. Students will spend 45 minutes in language arts and then 45 minutes in math, or vice versa. This allows students to have both subjects every day: 90 minutes of each on one day, and 45 minutes of each the next.
